Still no plans for building under construction near Meijer, say Sycamore city officials

SYCAMORE – While rumors continue to run rampant speculating what business will go in the new structure being built near Meijer off Peace Road in Sycamore, city officials said there still are no plans for the space yet.

John Sauter, Sycamore building and engineering director, said Wednesday the City has not received any permit applications for any inside build-outs for the building as of Wednesday morning. East Winnebago Development Corporation out of Rockford – more commonly known as First Midwest Group – currently owns the property, according to DeKalb County property records.

“As for the progress of the building, they are focusing on the building exterior [brick façade, windows, paints, etc.] and the parking lot [curbing, asphalt surface, striping] before the winter weather arrives,” Sauter wrote in an email.

The update comes after members of Sycamore area community social media groups have mulled over what possible corporate or franchise businesses could be eyeing the building. Community members have called for businesses like Starbucks or Chick-Fil-A to occupy the space.

Marvin Keys, lawyer for First Midwest Group, was not available for comment on Wednesday.

Sauter previously said in August contractor First Midwest Group is building a single-story shell building – meaning just the four walls, roof and exterior of the building – near the supermarket. The total area of the building is set to be 10,559 square feet.

Sauter confirmed months ago First Midwest Group will partition off the interior part for whomever the tenants may be. He also confirmed one of the units will have a drive-up window.

The contractor just started on foundation work at the site in early August, following site work a week before that.
