UPDATED 11 A.M. SATURDAY, MARCH 14:
YORKVILLE – Yorkville School District 115 officials have announced a revised plan of action for district students, staff and families after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker ordered schools to be shut down starting next week because of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.
Yorkville School District 115 Superintendent Tim Shimp wrote in an updated email sent Friday, evening, March 13 that Pritzker announced during a news conference at 4 p.m. Friday that his administration had ordered the closure of all schools in the state from March 17 through March 30 due to the coronavirus.
Shimp wrote school will be closed on Monday, March 16, for all students but all employees are expected to report to their respective buildings between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day. Parents and guardians who want to pick up student medication from nurses may do so during this time.
Kristine Liptrot, spokeswoman for Yorkville School District 115, said talks will continue about regimented e-learning curriculum plans for students going forward.
"That information will go home [to students] on Monday evening after the institute day," Liptrot said.
Shimp wrote there will be no school within school buildings on Tuesday, March 17 per the governor's order, but students who need to pick up their Chromebooks or devices, chargers, or other personal items from school may do so between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday. All third-grade students will be issued a Chromebook that can be checked out during those same hours and all students also will be provided learning activities to complete at home.
Shimp wrote spring break is still scheduled for March 23 through 27 and that students are tentatively scheduled to return to school March 31.
"During this time, district leadership will assess the evolving conditions related to COVID-19 and communicate any decisions to parents prior to their potential return to school on March 31," Shimp wrote.
For early childhood through third grade, Shimp wrote, parents are asked to complete a survey, available in English or in Spanish, by Sunday, March 15 as the district is in the process of assessing students' needs related to technology use outside of school.
The updates come after district officials previously announced that, after training periods for students and staff, e-learning days will be implemented for half of next week before their spring break.
Shimp previously wrote all e-learning days are considered instructional school days and will not extend the school year calendar. He wrote all student absences still must be reported during e-learning days.
Shimp previously wrote the mandates are being implemented as precautionary measures and there are currently no confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Kendall County. He wrote district staff will continue to monitor developments at the local, state and national levels, and promptly communicate any changes or updates to families.
"This is not a time for panic, but a time to act cautiously and to adopt healthy habits," Shimp previously wrote.
Shimp wrote the Monday institute day would have taken the place of the May 21 institute day and will not result in the school year calendar being extended.
Shimp wrote all extracurricular and co-curricular district activities are canceled until March 30, including all competitions, contests, practices and rehearsals. He wrote community based instruction also has been canceled, including the Yorkville High School Field Experience program and students who attend the Indian Valley Vocational Center.
Shimp wrote all field trips have been canceled until May 1. He wrote the use of district facilities, including building rentals and parent teacher organization events, will be closed to outside visitors and organizations, including parents, volunteers and speakers.
Shimp wrote all school-sponsored domestic and international trips are canceled. He wrote all work-related staff travel, including conferences, is canceled.
Information will also be posted to the district website at y115.org/coronavirus.
