Mystery Diner: Always 'Time 4' delicious donuts at Plano bakery

November is best known for Thanksgiving and the spirit of giving and friendship associated with the holiday. Recently, I decided to embrace that spirit by visiting Time 4 Donuts in Plano and bringing back some donuts for those in my office.

Recently opened, Time 4 Donuts is located in the corner of Lakewood Springs Commons, just off of Route 34 in Plano. The independent store prides itself on its fresh donuts, breakfast sandwiches, turnovers, muffins, fritters, croissants and cinnamon rolls, with donuts made fresh at the store each day.

When I visited Time 4 Donuts, I was immediately greeted by the employees behind the counter, who jumped to help me pick out my dozen donuts. As I was visiting the shop around noon, I was concerned that there wouldn't be a lot of options available, but I was happy to be proven wrong, as the choices I went with were delicious – and my coworkers agreed with me.

I chose a dozen donuts, opting for a wide variety to satisfy the diverse tastes of my coworkers: sprinkles, glazed, filled, long johns, cake donuts, sugar-covered, and more.

The yeast donuts were a light, fluffy texture, with a smooth, fresh taste. Typically, yeast donuts are my favorite type, and I was not disappointed by the variety made at Time 4 Donuts. The glaze was not so heavy that it overwhelmed or made fingers sticky, but it was still present enough to lend a sweet taste to the donut. The same can be said about the frosting. Smooth and not sugar-gritty, there wasn't too much like with some donuts, but just enough to complement.

Other highlights included the maple bacon long john, made with maple frosting and long strips of bacon on top. Hands down my favorite of the donuts in the dozen, the yeast donut was light and fluffy with a well-baked crust, coated with enough maple frosting to be tasted under the bacon strips, which were cooked perfectly for the donut. Not overly salty, not cooked to charcoal, the bacon complemented the maple frosting perfectly,

I was also pleased by the large croissant that I purchased, one of my favorite breakfast items. The texture of the croissant, which was larger than my hand, was similar to that of the yeast donuts that I enjoyed, but it was flakier, more buttery in taste – and it smelled wonderful.

My coworkers each praised the rest of the donuts, making sure to highlight the Boston Creme, the sour cream, and the cinnamon sugar. The Boston Creme was well filled, and the cream was a good flavor; the sour cream was crunchy and "very rich, decadent, even," according to my coworker; the cinnamon sugar was, as one coworker put it, "one of the best donuts I've had."

I conducted a side test of Time 4 Donuts, and took one of the two plain glazed donuts home with me, and reheated it for breakfast the next day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted exactly as delicious as the one I had the day before. The glaze hadn't gone stale, and the yeast was still fluffy and tasted fresh.

I don't often eat donuts, choosing instead to let other people buy them for me so that I can eat as much as I want. But I would be more than happy to return to Time 4 Donuts, whether for our office, or just for myself.
