Cortland's DC Trash purchased by Chicago business

CORTLAND – A Chicago recycling and waste company has acquired Cortland-based DC Trash of Illinois, although the local company’s office manager said no jobs are in jeopardy.

“This is more of a merger, instead of a buyout,” manager Nicole Bork said Thursday. “DC Trash will continue business as usual.”

Lakeshore Recycling Systems announced Tuesday that it purchased DC Trash, 14438 E. North Ave., which was founded in 2002 by President Dan Christensen.

Bork said the local waste hauler has 35 full-time employees and serves about 15,000 residential and business customers in the DeKalb County area.

“Dan (Christensen) and his team have done an outstanding job building DCT into a company recognized for quality and dependable service,” Lakeshore Recycling CEO Alan Handley said in a news release. “We welcome DCT customers to the larger LRS family and look forward to working with DCT as they continue to provide exceptional residential and business waste disposal and recycling services.”

According to the news release, LRS is adding DCT’s employees and its 30 vehicles to its fleet.

LRS has grown its annual sales to more than $170 million in the past five years, while it’s acquired multiple independent waste collection companies to expand its reach into Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota and southwest Michigan.
