A prosthesis is an artificial device designed to be a functional replacement for a missing limb. An orthotic is a brace that supports a weak limb, allowing the patient to stand and walk more efficiently or to reach for, grasp, or hold objects. The Marianjoy Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic treats patients of all ages and conditions. In this clinic, a physiatrist (MD specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation); an orthotist/prosthetist (the maker of braces and prosthetics); and a physical therapist all assess and collaborate on the best device for the patient. Following the assessment, the orthotist/prosthetist fabricates the device and custom-fits it for the patient. Then, the team assesses the fit and function of the device.
Trinette Carney is a pediatric physical therapist and supervisor of the Pediatric Program at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital. She specializes in casting, splinting, and orthotics with pediatric patients. “I love being in the Orthotic Clinic and analyzing a patient’s gait, and partnering with the team to help the patient achieve their independence,” said Carney. “I learn so much by collaborating with the physician and the orthotist, and I feel so fortunate to work in this unique setting.”
Marianjoy has recently purchased two high-technology gait-assessment systems, the Zeno Walkway and the Mobility Lab. “These systems will greatly enhance our ability to assess gait deviations for our patients,” said Carney. “The prosthetics and orthotics we create will be even more effective in optimizing patients’ independent walking. We’ll also conduct research and further improve the quality of care we provide our patients.”
