Oswego East recognizes 25 student athletes on National Signing Day

Borvan, Cain bound for Division I programs, Culbertson to join Illini wheelchair basketball team

With one month left until graduation, 25 Oswego East senior student athletes made their college plans official during National Signing day on April 13.

Oswego East athletic director Bobby Kaminski recognized the athletes' four-year commitments to their respective sports, and invited the coaches to introduce the individuals in the main gym in front of their family and friends. Matt Engelhardt opened by introducing Grant Argyilan (Illinois College), Jake Leonard (Iowa Wesleyan), Devin Geoffroy (College of DuPage) and Vince Schwartz (Carthage).

Tim Culbertson will attend the University of Illinois as a member of the wheelchair basketball team. He currently plays for Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA), and is the first player under coach Keith Wallace to go on to play at the collegiate level.

"He's a great kid to be around, and a good leader," Wallace said.

Culbertson was accepted into the mechanical engineering program.

"I have a very competitive nature," Culbertson said. "I met the team and they're happy to have me be a part of the team."

In girls bowling, Abby Ragsdale (St. Francis University) and Meghan Bradshaw (Aurora University) were introduced by coach Jeremy Hillman before football coach Tyson LeBlanc highlighted eight players, including Jack Borvan (Drake University), Kaelub Newman (Iowa Western) and Nik Wadsworth (College of DuPage), who were the only members of both playoff-bound teams in 2013 and 2015.

"It was pretty stressful to meet with so many different schools and you're not sure where your next home will be, but I was lucky to find my home at Drake University. I'm really excited because there's great opportunity there, and it fits all my needs. I'm really happy," Borvan said. "I'm really excited about working hard and doing what I did here. I think we're in very good hands [at Oswego East]. We set the bar, and I think they're going to exceed it."

Other football signees include Austin Chandler (Grand View, Iowa), Tyler Allison (Illinois Wesleyan), James Kidd (St. Ambrose), Alex Santillian (North Park University) and Matt Moran (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology).

Jim Vera recognized two-time golf sectional qualifier Max Behnke (Carthage), Wyatt Lamb (Governors State University) and Adam Densberger (Monmouth), who will also join the baseball team to become a two-sport collegiate athlete. Densberger is on the boys' volleyball team this spring, but most recetly played with the Oswego Panthers 17U travel team.

"Golf is definitely going to be the main sport in the fall because there is fall baseball, and in the spring there's a little bit of golf too," Densberger said. "I'll see [Max] at a golf invite or two."

Deryl Leubner introduced James Kaku, will compete for the Colorado Mesa University men's swim team, while Monica Jackson will swim for the University of Rochester.

Abby Cain, who is the only four-year member of both the cross country and track teams under Lisa Cook, will run for the University of South Alabama. Makenzie Kennedy will run for Wheaton College, Rachel Roschi will compete at Carthage and Ashley Buado will run at North Central.

"I've always wanted to go far for college and they came to our college for a college fair. ... I visited last February and my mom fell in love with it, I fell in love with it, and I knew that was the place I was going to go," Cain said. "I'm probably going to stick to the 10K in track. The two mile sounds long, but it's still too short for me. I really want to try steeplechase too."

From the girls' volleyball program, coach Adam Thurlwell recognized two college-bound players in Alexa Jardenil (Illinois College) and Katelynn Kuehl (University of Arkansas at Monticello).
