Snow continues to hinder Joliet, Plainfield schools Thursday

The Joliet area received between 8 and 10 inches of snow Wednesday

The snowy weather continued to keep Will County students out of the classroom Thursday, despite the heaviest of the snowfall letting up.

Jolie Public Schools District 86 sent a message to families late Wednesday that there would be another snow day Thursday “due to unsafe road conditions and transportation concerns.” The district said it will make up Thursday’s lost school day June 3.

District 86 also had a traditional snow day Wednesday in anticipation of the area receiving several inches of snow. It’s the third emergency day off the district has had, including the one Jan. 26 because of extremely cold weather.

The district had not implemented an emergency remote-learning plan before this school year, the district said.

Joliet Township High School District 204 held a second consecutive emergency remote-learning day Thursday because of inclement weather conditions.

New Lenox School District 122 and Lincoln-Way District 210 also held remote learning Thursday. District 210 said on its website that it could not schedule in-person classes “due to the immense amount of snow we received today, and the significant amount of time it is going to take to clear that snow from our campuses.”

“While our maintenance crews have been hard at work since early (Wednesday) morning, they simply could not keep up with the amount of snow that fell,” the district said.

While Plainfield School Community Consolidated District 202 held in-person classes Thursday, it sent a message early in the morning to families warning that buses might be “significantly delayed or may not run” because of the weather.

“If possible, please plan to transport your children to school today, or make alternate transportation arrangements,” district spokesman Tom Hernandez said in the message.

The National Weather Service’s Chicago Office reported more than 8 inches of snowfall in Joliet on Wednesday morning and about 10 inches at its facility in Romeoville.
