Five Years Ago in Lemont

In the Sept. 23, 2011, edition of the Lemont Reporter/Met, the predecessor newspaper of the Lemont Suburban Life:

• Former U.S. Olympian Ron Urick led the inductees into the Lemont High School Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1986 graduate, Urick was a member of the U.S. Olympic canoe and kayak team that competed at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Other inductees were basketball star J.P. Brusk, Class of 1965, and the 1978-80 girls hoops squad.

• Breast cancer survivor Carol Zdenek of Lemont talked about her experience with the disease and her efforts to spread the word about the importance of mammography. Zdenek, whose cancer was caught by a mammogram, was planning to share her story at an event at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

• Lemont High School’s football team blanked Thornton Fractional 30-0 and was looking forward to an important matchup against similarly unbeaten Tinley Park. The matchup of 4-0 teams was bound to knock someone from first place in the South Suburban Blue conference.
