Maywood cop from Bolingbrook charged with sexual assault

WHEATON — A former Maywood police officer from Bolingbrook has been charged with sexual assault after prosecutors say he assaulted a woman he picked up while he was on duty in March.

Deon Sams, 38, of 212 Orchard Drive, is facing two counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 Felony, as well as felony official misconduct. He is being held at DuPage County Jail on $200,000 bond.

Sams is accused of assaulting a woman he picked up in his squad car early on March 24. While on patrol in Maywood, Sams encountered the woman walking along the streets, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Prosecutors say Sams returned with the woman to the police department, moved her to his personal vehicle and took her to a hotel where he rented a room.

"Once inside the room, it is alleged that Sams then sexually assaulted the woman," a release from the state's attorney's office stated.

According to the state's attorney's office, Sams is no longer a Maywood police officer. The department could not immediately explain why or when Sams departed.

“My office takes any allegation of a sexual assault very seriously,” State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a press release. “What makes this case particularly disturbing is the alleged offender is a police officer. I would like to stress that the allegations against Mr. Sams are not a reflection of the fine men and women of the Maywood Police Department."
