What to know about promise rings

Has your relationship reached a significant milestone but you have no immediate plans for marriage? A promise ring can be a tangible way to show your devotion and commitment to your partner. Here is what you need to know about this token of love:

1. History of promise rings

According to the Gemological Institute of America, the concept of promise rings dates back to the Middle Ages, between the 13th and 16th centuries. Men gave the rings to their love interests, sometimes with a romantic phrase engraved inside them.

2. Significance of promise rings

“Promise rings symbolize that a couple is serious about their relationship,” said Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers. “It does not necessarily mean that it is a promise to marry — that is what an engagement ring is for.”

3. Styles of promise rings

“Some of the more popular styles are symbols of love, such as a heart, infinity symbol or the Irish Claddagh,” Murphy said. “But any style of ring can be a promise ring.”

Just make sure to tailor the ring to your love’s taste.

4. Where to wear promise rings

The left ring finger is the most common placement for a promise ring, Murphy said.

“Kind of as a placeholder for an engagement ring,” she said. “But they can be worn on any finger.”
