Manscaping trend bringing more men to the spa

Is there a man in your life looking to hit the spa?

These days, men’s personal grooming services, also known as manscaping, continues to be a growing trend.

Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, said laser hair removal treatments are popular among Eterna’s male clientele.

“We do backs necks and back of the neck,” she said. “I do have a couple of men that also have the sides of their face lasered.”

How does the treatment work? A laser targets hair follicles and heats them with infrared energy. The patient’s skin is rapidly treated and hundreds of hair follicles can be disabled in less than one second. Hair growth takes place in cycles of growth and resting phases. Because only actively growing hair can be removed at each treatment session, several treatment sessions will be necessary.

Other male clients find waxing a more appealing option for getting rid of their unwanted hair.

“Some men opt to have their back, neck and shoulders waxed before they go on vacation,” Malinowski said.

The treatment removes the entire hair follicle from the root.

“We also shape up men’s eyebrows,” Malinowski said. “Mostly the unibrow.”

Men are also realizing the benefits of facials and microdermabrasions. The latter is a facial procedure which offers a deep exfoliation to remove the layer of dead cells that have accumulated on the skin’s surface, letting the smooth, fresh skin underneath shine through.

The exfoliation is done using a hand-held powerful electronic vacuum which sprays high-grade micro crystals across the surface of the skin through a pressurized wand in order to slough off the damaged layers.

During the treatments, estheticians offer advice on common skin complaints in men.

“And we go over the importance of good skin care,” Malinowski said.
