Unique ideas for packing your jewelry for a trip

Is a trip in the cards for you sometime this year? If you plan to bring some of your favorite baubles along, you’ll want to make sure they arrive safely. Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers, offers these tips for doing just that:

1. Take the appropriate jewelry for the occasion

If you are planning a trip hiking or hanging out on the beach, you may not want to take your expensive jewelry.

“We have heard how rings have been lost in the ocean or gone missing from a hotel room,” Murphy said. “Some people will buy an inexpensive silver with cubic zirconia ring that they wear on vacation.”

2. Pack jewelry in your carry-on

As checked bags have a much greater chance of getting lost, it’s best to put jewelry in a traveler’s case in your carry-on bag. The organizer has specific compartments for rings, bracelets, earrings, and more, to keep them organized. Additionally, it helps to prevent items from bumping against each other.

“This will reduce the risk of damaging prongs or stones,” Murphy said.

3. Repurpose household items

For bulkier necklaces and bracelets, use a paper towel tube. For a single chain, a straw can be used. Just slip one end of the chain through the tube then clasp it.

“Ziploc bags will work also,” Murphy said. “Just leave the clasp hanging out of the bag to keep the chain from tangling.”

Earrings can be attached to fabric, such as a washcloth or a piece of felt.

“Put them along the edge and then roll it up to protect the posts from getting bent,” said Murphy.

A weekly pill container works for several rings, or they can be hooked on a binder ring or a large safety pin and then hooked on the roll used for the earrings.

But, warns Murphy, don’t wrap jewelry in anything you might accidentally throw away.

“Like a Kleenex or paper towel,” she said.
