Diamond shapes and what your preference may say about you

When it comes to selecting a diamond, there are 10 basic cut shapes from which to choose.

“The round cut diamond is the most popular diamond shape for jewelry and engagement rings, with ovals as the second most requested,” said Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers.

Often the cut of the diamond you prefer can often reveal something about your personality.

What does your diamond cut preference say about you? Murphy offers this overview:

  • Round: you are traditional, sincere, timeless
  • Oval: you are sophisticated, creative and trendsetting
  • Pear: modest, easy going and adventurous
  • Princess: fun loving, traditional with a touch of modern
  • Emerald: glamorous, confident, keen for design
  • Cushion: fashionable, trustworthy, romantic
  • Heart: romantic, sentimental and devoted
  • Radiant: fun, confident and trustworthy
  • Marquise: dramatic, outgoing, amusing
  • Asscher: vintage, unique, feminine

“These are general qualities of what you may be drawn to,” Murphy said.

Another important factor to keep in mind?

“It makes a difference on how it looks on your hand,” Murphy said. “We will have ladies come in looking for a specific shape that they have seen and love, but when they have it on their hand, sometimes they feel differently.”

To that end, it’s always a good idea to test out other shapes.

“You never know what personality trait will win,” Murphy said.
