Metra to resume full Saturday schedule for Rock Island line this week

The Rock Island line runs through Joliet, New Lenox and Mokena to Chicago

Metra recently announced it will resume its full Saturday train schedules on seven lines, including the Rock Island line which runs through Will County, starting on Saturday.

Service will return to pre-pandemic levels on the Rock Island line, which has stops in Joliet, New Lenox and Mokena and ends at LaSalle Street station in Chicago. The agency said in a news release it is resuming full Saturday service in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

“The Memorial Day weekend is the official start of the summer season, and with many events and festivals returning to Chicago, it’s the perfect time to welcome back our customers,” Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski said in the release. “We know that people are excited to get out and enjoy activities across the region, and Metra offers them a convenient and economical way to get there without the hassle of traffic and parking.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted ridership on public transit, Metra said it never stopped running. Still, it had to reduce its service on certain lines at times due to the pandemic.
