Newman flies transgender rights flag across from Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who came out against bill with LGBTQ protections

Newman, whose daughter is transgender, said the flag represents ‘millions of Americans that deserve not to be bullied or discriminated against’

Marie Newman

U.S. Rep. Marie Newman put up the transgender rights flag outside her office across from a Republican colleague who tried to block legislation which would provide protections for LGBTQ individuals.

Newman said in a Facebook post that she placed the flag across the hall from the office of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, because Taylor Green attempted to block the Equality Act.

“Our neighbor ... tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is ‘disgusting, immoral, and evil,’” Newman said in the post. “Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door.”

She followed the statement with an emoji of a winking face.

Greene has gained attention and was kicked off House committees, for espousing conspiracy theories and advocating for violence against Democratic lawmakers.

In a statement against the Equality Act, Greene said she proposed “America First” amendments to “fundamentally change the disastrous bill.”

Republicans like Greene argue the bill would diminish religious freedoms.

Rep. David Cicilline, D-Rhode Island, recently reintroduced the Equality Act. The House passed the legislation in 2019, but the Senate failed to take it up.

Not long after Newman posted her video, Greene responded with a video of her own showing her putting up a sign reading “There are two genders: male and female.”

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, also took to Twitter to comment on Greene’s response. Kinzinger has become a frequent critic of Republicans like Greene who have circulated false statements about widespread election fraud and other conspiracy theories.

“This is sad and I’m sorry this happened,” Kinzinger wrote. “Rep. Newman’s daughter is transgender, and this video and tweet represents the hate and fame driven politics of self-promotion at all evil costs. This garbage must end, in order to #RestoreOurGOP.”

Newman later said she is “immensely proud” of her transgender daughter.

“Our transgender flag not only represents her but the millions of Americans that deserve not to be bullied or discriminated against by anyone — let alone a sitting member of Congress,” Newman tweeted. “Enough with the hate, let’s pass the #EqualityAct.”

On the House floor, Newman argued the bill would protect people like her daughter from being denied housing and education because they identify as transgender.

“I’m voting to pass the Equality Act for my daughter — the strongest, bravest person I know,” Newman said.
