Bandit captured after robbery in Hollywood Casino parking lot: cops

Damion Nabil Gather

A woman who went to the parking lot of Hollywood Casino to buy an iPhone ended up getting robbed but her assailant was captured the next morning.

Damion Nabil Gather, 22, managed to give the law the slip after they showed up to his home on Pontigo Glen Drive shortly after 8:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a statement released Monday by the Joliet Police Department, but officers with the Shorewood Police Department apprehended him at a nearby business on Vertin Boulevard.

The robbed woman had gone to the Joliet Police Department shortly after 4 p.m. Friday and told of how she was ripped off in the casino parking lot, according to the statement.

The woman related that she made a deal to buy an iPhone through the mobile market place app OfferUp, police said, but when she arrived for the rendezvous in the Hollywood parking lot, the supposed seller cornered her, asked where the money was, opened her jacket and snatched the cash.

The crook then got in a vehicle and took off, according to police.

Detectives identified the thief as Gather and officers tracked him down to a residence on Pontigo Glen Drive, police said, but he ran out the back before they could arrest him.

“A short time later, Officers from the Shorewood Police Department located Gather in a business near Shorewood Drive and Vertin Boulevard,” according to the Joliet police statement.

During an interview with detectives, Gather “indicated his involvement in the robbery,” police said.

Gather was arrested on probable cause of robbery and booked into the Will County jail, records show.

Gather appeared in court Sunday and his bond was set at $75,000, according to jail records, and he was scheduled to return to court Wednesday.
