Teen caught with loaded gun in Joliet: cops

A 15-year-old was arrested after officers caught him sitting next to a loaded handgun with a defaced serial number, police said.

About 11:42 p.m. on Tuesday, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 200 block of West Jefferson Street for an expired registration, Joliet police said in a news release.

Officers identified a 15-year-old male as a passenger in the vehicle and noted that it appeared he was attempting to conceal an item between his legs on the floorboards, police said.

After searching the vehicle, officers located a loaded .22-caliber handgun in a bag on the floorboards, police said.

After further inspection of the handgun, it appeared the serial number had been defaced, police said.

The 15-year-old was arrested on probable cause of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon‚ defacing identification marks on a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and having no firearm owner’s identification card.

The teen was taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Joliet.
