Man accidentally shot himself, Joliet police say

Emergency crew responded to incident on Waverly Place

A man died after he accidentally shot himself with a firearm, according to Joliet police.

Shortly before 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Waverly Place for a report of a man who shot himself with a firearm, said Joliet police Sgt. Dwayne English.

Officers located a 22-year-old man inside the residence with a mortal gunshot wound, English said.

“After interviews with those present on the scene, it was determined that the victim was handling an AR .223 pistol at which time the gun discharged, striking the victim in the head,” English said.

The Will County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and pronounced the man deceased, English said. The office has not released any information on the man’s death as of Thursday.

An emergency crew with the Joliet Fire Department also responded to the scene.

“Due to the extent of the injury, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey.
