Joliet man charged with battering security guard, stealing from Jewel-Osco

Man accused of concealing merchandise in a backpack he left behind, police said

A man wanted in a felony theft case was arrested after he was accused of stealing from a Joliet Jewel-Osco store and pushing a security guard to the ground, police said.

Kendale Coleman, 31, of Joliet was charged with aggravated battery and theft in connection with the incident, court records show. A judge found probable cause on Wednesday to continue Coleman’s detention at the Will County jail and set a $50,000 bond.

About 4 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the Jewel-Osco at 1401 W. Jefferson St. for a report of retail theft and determined Coleman was seen by security staff concealing merchandise in a backpack, Joliet police said in a news release.

Coleman was also seen putting on a T-shirt that was for sale and leaving the store without paying for the merchandise, police said.

A security guard confronted Coleman in the parking lot about the theft but he “pushed the security guard to the ground and fled from parking lot on a bicycle, leaving the backpack behind in the process,” police said.

“Coleman was located a short distance away by officers and placed into custody without incident,” police said.

On June 29, Coleman was charged with stealing Tide laundry detergent and a hat from the Dollar General Store at 916 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet after he was previously convicted of burglary in a 2016 case, court records show.

He failed to appear in court on Tuesday in the theft case and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest, according to court records.
