Joliet man stole bicycle, beat dog with garbage can lid: cops

Man was released from prison in April

An ex-convict punched a man, stole his bicycle and was seen by officers striking a dog with a garbage can lid, police said.

About 2 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to Collins and Columbia streets for a report of a robbery, according to a Joliet police news release.

The officers arrived and determined that Andre Ross, 33, of of the 1000 block of Lois Place in Joliet had approached a man and demanded his bicycle, police said.

“Ross punched the victim in the head and took the victim’s bike, backpack and hat,” police said.

While officers checked the area for Ross, they received a report of a man kicking a dog in the 400 block of Liberty Street.

“Upon arrival, officers observed Ross striking a dog with a garbage can lid,” police said.

Ross was arrested after a brief struggle, according to police.

Ross was identified as the man who committed the bicycle robbery, police said. He was taken to the Joliet Police Department for booking and then transported to the Will County jail.

“The victim received their items taken in the robbery,” police said.

Ross has been on parole since April 13, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was sentenced to a year in prison after he was convicted of resisting an officer.
