Motorcycle operator killed in Joliet crash

Crash occurred on Route 53 and Doris Avenue

A motorcycle operator was killed in a crash on Route 53 near Nowell Park.

The man was identified by the Will County Coroner’s Office as Calvin J. Thompson, 57, of Joliet.

About 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to Route 53 and Doris Avenue for a report of a crash with injuries, Joliet police said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation of the wreck revealed a 57-year-old man was driving a motorcycle north on Route 53 and approaching Doris Avenue when he was struck by an SUV, police said.

The 69-year-old driver of the SUV was turning left from a southbound lane on Route 53 to Doris Avenue, police said.

“The 57-year-old male driver was ejected from his motorcycle and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said.

Paramedics with the Joliet Fire Department found the man “lying in the roadway,” said Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey. The man had suffered “significant injuries,” he said.

The SUV driver was uninjured. He refused care at the scene, Blaskey said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Joliet Police Department’s traffic unit.
