Crest Hill woman escaped from squad car after retail theft arrest: cops

Woman apprehended again, placed in transport van, police said

A Crest Hill woman who was arrested for stealing about $1,100 worth of products from Meijer in Bolingbrook escaped from a police squad car and kept kicking the partition of another vehicle she was placed in that one, police said.

About 2:18 p.m. Sunday, officers were sent to the Meijer at 755 E. Boughton Road, for a retail theft and discovered the offender had stolen a cart full of merchandise valued at about $1,100, Bolingbrook police Lt. Anthony Columbus said.

The offender, later identified as Yvette Mannie, 34, was confronted a loss prevention employee from Meijer but she refused stop, Columbus said. She then left the scene in Dodge Caravan.

Responding officers saw Mannie and stopped the vehicle, Columbus said. Mannie was positively identified as the offender and proceeds from the theft were located in the vehicle, he said.

Mannie gave two separate false names to the officers who eventually arrested her, Columbus said. Mannie was handcuffed and placed in the rear of a squad car, he said.

During the drive to the police department, Mannie was able to open the partition from the backseat of the vehicle and crawl through the partition, Columbus said.

“As the transporting officer stopped the vehicle, Mannie was able to open the passenger door and run from the squad car. Mannie was quickly apprehended,” Columbus said.

A transport van then responded to the scene and Mannie was put in that vehicle, he said.

During the second drive, Mannie began kicking the partition in the transport van and caused damage to the interior of the van, Columbus said.

“Mannie was uncooperative throughout the booking process,” Columbus said.

Officers also discovered Mannie had two active warrants for her arrest, he said.

Mannie was charged with retail theft, criminal damage to property and attempted escape. She remains in the Will County jail on a $100,000 bond.
