A trio of 3-point shooters from local schools are in the field of those competing to be the King of the Hill.
The preliminary rounds are set to be contested Saturday morning with the top four shooters in Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A advancing to the finals with the winners of those shootouts qualifying to compete in the King of the Hill competition that will be held between the Class 1A and 2A State Championship games.
Representing the area in the Class 4A field are Minooka’s Preston Van Pelt and Joliet West’s Toby Onyekonwu. In Class 2A, Seneca’s Noah Quigley is slated to compete.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
JJC 77, Sandhills (NC) Community College 49: In the first round of the NJCAA Division III Tournament, the 10th-seeded Wolves dominated the action from the start. JJC led, 38-24, at halftime and outscored the Flyers, 39-25, in the second half.
Joel Watts led a quartet of JJC players in double figures with 15 points. Joliet West graduate Luke Morrow and Lincoln-Way East’s Jhei-R Jones each scored 13 points and Plainfield Central’s Tavari Johnson added 12. Plainfield Central’s Brandon Shoemaker added seven points. Jones had a team-high 11 rebounds for the Wolves (27-4), who advanced to Thursday night’s second round against second-seeded Genesee, NY (28-4) at 7 p.m. Watts and Morrow added seven rebounds each, while Johnson had a team-high six assists.
