Brennan Luz pumped in 18 points, including three critical fourth quarter 3-pointers to lead Joliet Catholic to a 49-46 win over Providence in a matchup of local rivals played at Marist High School during the ESCC/CCL Challenge on Saturday.
Joliet Catholic improved to 6-2 on the season with victory, while Providence fell to 1-7 on the season.
Jack Wajda led Providence with 14 points.
Lincoln-Way Central 77, Bloomington 72: Frank DeCarlo stepped up in a bit way for the Knights, piling up 31 points and six assists.
Jack Vegter pitched in with a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double, Jack Novak scored 11 and Ethan Aluyi hauled in 13 boards in the win.
Morris 66, Wilmington 46: At Morris, the home team overcame a rough night shooting to earn a victory over the Wildcats.
AJ Zweeres led the way with 18 points, Henry Hansen added 17 points and eight rebounds and Aidan Romak scored 10 in the win.
Plainfield North 62, Normal West 42: At Normal, North bounced back with a solid victory on the road.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Maine South 69, Lincoln-Way West 65: At New Lenox, the Warriors suffered a tough loss at home by a narrow margin.
Ava Gugliuzza was a silver lining with 32 points in the loss for L-WW (3-4).
Batavia 53, Burlington Central 52: At Batavia, the Rockets fell in a heartbreaker on the road in spite of a brilliant effort from Taylor Charles.
Charles led Central (4-3) with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks, while Becca Carani scored 14 and Rylie DuVal pitched in with 13 points.
WRESTLING
Lyons Mega Duals: At La Grange, Lincoln-Way Central won two matches and lost one at Lyons.
The Knights defeated Hinsdale Central 63-10 and Lyons 60-24 before losing 42-28 to Marist. Joey Malito had a big day with wins in all three matches.
Riverdale Invite: At Port Byron, Seneca finished seventh with 93 points at the Riverdale Invite.
Asher Hamby was top finisher for the Irish, taking second at 152 pounds. Kyler Hahn (106) and Jaden Casey (126) took third in their respective weight classes, while Owen Feiner (145) and Christ Peura (195) took fourth.
Downers Grove South Invite: At Downers Grove, Lincoln-Way West took fourth place at the 16-team tournament.
All-tournament honors were given to Jase Salin (120) and Michael Sneed (220) who each went 5-0 on the day. Cameron Knepper finished with an honorable mention after going 4-1.
Coal City went 2-3 as a team to take eighth place. Brant Widlowski made the all-tournament team and went 5-0 on the day.
