Providence’s Emma Davis earned three straight wins on Day 1 of the Class 1A Girls Tennis State Tournament on Thursday to secure a spot in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Davis opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Antioch’s Natalie Labicki, defeated Flora’s Madison Eastin, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round, then cemented her quarterfinal spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Richwoods’ Julia Wojtowicz.
Joliet Catholic’s Ella Pfanenstiel was eliminated in the second round of the consolation bracket. She opened with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Timothy Christian’s Crystina Lee but bounced back in the first consolation round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Greenville’s Ellie Schaufelberger. Pfanensteil was eliminated by Flora’s Lanie Carder, 5-7, 6-1, 10-4.
In doubles action, Morris’ Elizabeth Kenney and Gretchen Zarbock were eliminated in the second consolation round. The duo started the day with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 victory over Wheaton Academy’s Audery Litfin and Jillian Paulson, then suffered back-to-back losses to end the day. The first came in a 6-3, 6-2 second-round loss to Dunlap’s Shikha Agarwal and Mary Meghrian, and the second was a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Glenwood’s Anna Chambers and Lauren Schrage.
JCA’s Sarah Scharp and Caroline Pender lost their opener, 6-1, 6-1, to Normal U-High’s Brooke and Haley Martin, bounced back with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the first consolation round over Rochester’s Sophie Ommen and Raleigh Meneghetti and were eliminated in the second consolation round with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Coal City’s Abby and Molly Stiles.
Coal City’s Abby and Molly Stiles opened the day with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Boylan’s Elise Pecora and Isabel Furst before being bumped to the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 second-round loss to Timothy Christian’s Clarissa Chen and Jane Carter. Stiles and Stiles then bounced back with the aforementioned win over Scharp and Pender, then were eliminated in the third consolation round, 6-2, 6-2, at the hands of Triad’s Karen Speer and Sami Hartoin.
Class 2A State Tournament: Plainfield North’s Jessica Kovalcik swept through her three matches on Day 1 of the Class 2A state tournament to earn a spot in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Kovalcik defeated Maine West’s Lilliam Dockal, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening round, beat Conant’s Kaitlyn Strilich, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round, then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Hinsdale Central’s Nicole Hu.
Lincoln-Way Central’s Kara Rimkunas started the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Moline’s Camille Keys, then lost to Sandburg’s Maia Loureiro. She then defeated Huntley’s Ruhi Gulati, 6-4, 6-4, in the second consolation round before being eliminated, 6-0, 6-1, by Niles West’s Abby Penados.
Lincoln-Way East’s Mia Galassini lost her first-round match, 6-2, 6-1, to Edwardsville’s Chloe Koons, defeated Wheaton Warrenville South’s Brooke Ittersagen, 6-2, 6-4, in the first consolation round and was eliminated, 6-0, 6-1, by Penados.
On the doubles side, Lincoln-Way East’s Ava Shafer and Vanessa Tedoro, Plainfield North’s Isabela Person and Thea Salcedo, Lincoln-Way West’s Grace Denton and Sarah Fuchsgruber, Lockport’s Patricia and Emelia Jurzyk and L-WE’s Erika Ho and Kellie Sucha were all eliminated with 0-2 records.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Lockport 2, Downers Grove South 1: At Downers Grove, the Porters notched their 23rd win in a row with a 19-25, 25-12, 25-21 victory.
Aleksa Simkus led the way with seven kills, Meg Consigny added six kills and 14 digs, and Lainey Green had eight aces and seven assists.
Lincoln-Way West 2, TF South 0: At Lansing, the Warriors ended their regular season with a road victory over TF South.
Emma Ronaldson had four kills in the 25-20, 25-13 win.
Oswego 2, Joliet Central 1: At Oswego, the Panthers fought their way to a 25-9, 23-25, 25-12 win over the Steelmen.
Minooka 2, Oswego East 0: At Oswego, Minooka snatched a 25-18, 25-22 road win over the Wolves.
Lilly King had nine digs and seven assists and in the win, and Jada Hampton added three kills and four blocks.
