Dixon volleyball falls in Winnebago, will play for seventh place in BNC

The Sauk Valley men’s tennis team closed the regular season with a 6-3 win over College of DuPage on Wednesday in Dixon, finishing with a 7-2 record.

Preston Engel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Jacob Teveer won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and Imanol Aburto won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Terveer and Zach Wallace notched a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and the Skyhawks also received forfeits and No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Sauk will compete in the Region IV Tournament on Friday and Sunday in the suburbs.

Volleyball

Winnebago def. Dixon 22-25, 25-23, 25-23: The Duchesses battled in all three sets, but fell in the consolation semifinals of the Big Northern Conference Tournament in Winnebago.

Mallory Coley had 10 kills, nine digs, two blocks and two aces for Dixon, and Addyson Kinn finished with 18 assists, four kills and two blocks. Sam Tourtillott had six kills, 13 digs and two aces, Elena Castillo-Wetzell added 10 digs and two aces, and Natalie Davidson also served a pair of aces.

The Duchesses will host Byron in the seventh-place game at 6 p.m. today.

Rockford Lutheran def. Oregon 25-21, 25-16: The Hawks fell in the BNC Tournament semifinals in Rockford, and will host Mendota in the third-place game at 6 p.m. today.

Eastland def. Polo 25-18, 25-21: The Cougars claimed the NUIC title with a two-set win in Lanark.

Addison Burkholder had 11 kills and 13 digs, and Karlie Krogman added six kills and a block for Eastland (17-3, 8-0). Chloe Sweitzer had 14 digs and three aces, Natalie Hughes dished 25 assists, and Paige Bardell chipped in 10 digs. Annika Myre served a pair of aces.

Abby Grozny had four kills, five digs and three aces for the Marcos, and Nicole Boelens finished with two kills, two blocks, 10 assists, nine digs and an ace. March Blake added two kills, two digs, an ace and a block, and Harper Clark chipped in 10 digs and an ace.

Aquin def. AFC 2-0: The Raiders fell in two sets in an NUIC match in Freeport.

Brittney Mundell led AFC five kills, five digs and three blocks, while Jessica Milligan dished six assists and Sara Ramadani added five digs.

Softball

Fulton 10, Dixon 4: The Duchesses dropped their season opener on the road, as the Steamers scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to rally for a victory.

Dixon led 1-0 after the second inning, then Fulton tied it up in the third. Dixon scored once in the top of the fourth, then Fulton went ahead 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Duchesses grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Olivia Mowery had two hits and two RBIs to lead Dixon.

Mariah Underwood had three hits and two RBIs for Fulton, and Anna Jacobs added two hits and drove in three runs. Liz Fish struck out eight and walked one, allowing six hits in a complete-game victory.

Baseball

Fulton 11, Milledgeville 7: The Steamers scored in every inning but the fourth and overcame a six-run third by the Missiles to win at home.

Jacob Jones had three hits and three RBIs for Fulton, and also got the win on the mound in relief of starter Drew Dykstra. Cameron Glazier had two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs.

Nick Smith drove in a pair of runs for Milledgeville, and Ashton Nobis and Treyton Selman each added two hits. Kieren Harris took the loss in relief of Selman.

NBA

Roby back in lineup for Thunder: After missing Monday’s game with a foot injury, Dixon native Isaiah Roby came off the bench in Oklahoma City’s 122-116 loss to the Pacers on Wednesday in Indianapolis.

Roby had seven points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal, playing 28 minutes before fouling out. He shot 3-for-6 from the field, hitting his only 3-pointer.

The Thunder (20-39), who have lost 12 straight, play again Friday against the Wizards at home.

MLB

No-decision for Junis: Rock Falls native Jakob Junis struggled in his second start of the season, but did not suffer a loss as the Royals rallied to beat the Rays 9-8 at Kauffman Stadium.

Junis pitched allowed five runs – all earned – and six hits ion five innings, striking out three and walking three. Four of those runs came in the top of the first, including a two-run home run by Brandon Lowe.

But Kansas City scored four runs in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead, then scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the victory.
