What To Do If Your Garage Door Opener Stops Working

You’re returning home from a long drive and just want to get inside and relax. Or, you’re in a rush to get out of the house, so you hit the button on your garage door remote. Nothing. Zip. Zilch.

You press the button repeatedly, but the door won’t open. Now what?

There are many reasons why your garage door remote suddenly stopped working. Here are some common problems, and what to do about them.

  • The batteries are dead. This is always a good place to start. When is the last time you replaced the batteries in your remote? Is there a little light on the remote that comes on when you press the button? If your remote has that feature and no light comes on, swap the battery, and try again.
  • Check the lock button. Depending on what type of garage door you have, there may be a lock button feature on the wall mounted panel inside the garage. Sometimes the lock button gets tapped by mistake. Check the button, and then try your remote again.
  • The wiring may be malfunctioning. Try to raise or lower the door with the wall mounted panel. If neither that, nor your remote work, then there may be an issue with the wiring of the door’s motor. Unplug the opener from the socket and disconnect the two motor wires. Then reconnect them, plug the opener back in and try again. If the door still won’t move, it probably needs servicing.
  • Something is disrupting the remote signal. Just like the batteries, it could be a simple interruption in signal caused by debris or being too far from the door. Look at the antenna on the receiver to check that it’s clear of clutter or dirt. Then make sure your remote is within the proper range to open or close the door and press the button.
