Suicide

Coping with the death of a loved one is always difficult. It is a time of grief and filled with emotional challenges.

If death occurs by suicide, the shock and confusion that the family and friends of the deceased feel can be devastating at the onset. As you go through the grieving process however, there are some smart and healthy ways to cope with such difficult news.

Although it may not be easy to consider in the moment, it is important to be prepared for various emotional states. As with any death of a loved one, your feelings can run anywhere from surprise and sadness to confusion and eventually, acceptance. In the case of a suicide however, these emotions can be intensified by the sudden news and be difficult to process.

In the heightened state of immediate grief, you may be angry with the deceased for leaving you. You might even feel guilty and place some blame upon yourself as a factor in the person’s unfortunate decision. It’s important to take your time and process these feelings thoroughly and reach out for support as needed.

You should also be prepared for what may seem like a lack of compassion from others at first. That does not mean that people don’t care, only that they could have a hard time discussing a sensitive matter like suicide. They may not know what to say and may not be ready to reach out immediately. In such a case, you could feel alone or further saddened if you perceive that you aren’t getting the necessary support right away.

This is where certain healthy and proactive coping methods can be utilized.

It’s perfectly ok to reach out to trusted friends or loved ones in your time of grief. It is a good thing to seek comfort, which will help begin the healing process. Do whatever feels natural to you but be ready for reminders of the tragedy, and to be encouraged to talk to loved ones openly. Taking the initiative with these steps is a sign of strength.

It is also important to try and be patient and not rush things. The grieving process following a sudden tragedy like suicide should take place naturally and it is best to not hurry through it.

If you feel it is necessary, seek professional help near you. There are many support groups and counseling services in the area that can help you though such a difficult time. You may experience feelings of doubt and even guilt or anger, but in time, the severity of those feelings will give way to peace and understanding.
