One of the most important systems in your home is the plumbing. Between sinks, toilets, bathtubs, washing machines and more, common problems like leaks, low water pressure or clogged drains are just waiting to happen.

If and when any of these issues occur, repairing them can be costly if not addressed quickly and properly. Here are some general plumbing tips that every homeowner should be aware of.

Be prepared with the right tools

It is a good practice to invest in tools before you think you need them, so they are at the ready when the time comes. Plumbing is no different. One of the best things to have on hand is a quality plunger. This often-overlooked tool is ideal for clearing clogged toilets, sinks and drains, which can quickly prevent further problems.

The same goes for a good wet-dry shop-vac. Unlike many regular vacuums, shop-vacs can handle large amounts of water and debris. This makes them great for dislodging sinks and drains clogged by small objects (like a toothbrush or jewelry), as well as to quickly clean up any large leaks or spills. Other key tools to have on hand are things like plumber’s wrenches, plumber’s tape, and drain snakes.

Address any leaks quickly

If you have a steady drip in any of your faucets or shower heads, its essentially money going down the drain. Over time, that little leak can lead to much bigger problems and will almost certainly increase your water bill and could affect your home’s water pressure. So, don’t ignore that tiny drip or the running toilet.

Don’t over-tighten

If you’re tightening or replacing any pipes or connections, be careful not to over-tighten the fittings, especially on copper or metal pipes. Doing so can weaken the connections, and even break the bolts, which will contribute to unsealed joints that will leak or break altogether. In most cases, just finger-tight is the best solution.

Beware those minerals

Over time, your shower heads and faucets can develop mineral deposits. This is common, but if not cleared, they will prevent good water flow. If you notice the deposits building up, you can unscrew the heads and soak them for about 24 hours to break down the deposits and restore proper flowage. There are special cleaners for this purpose, but you can also use simple vinegar that you may already have at home!
