Letter: Remember Vietnam Veterans

Sauk Valley Letters to the Editor

To the Editor

With all the chaos going on now in Ukraine, we are reminded of those valiant men and women who have fought and died protecting our freedoms. Those who fought in Vietnam are especially remembered on March 29, Vietnam War Veterans Day.

The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act was formed in 2017 in a presidential proclamation which stated “With conviction, our Nation pledges our enduring respect, our continuing care, and our everlasting commitment to all Vietnam veterans.”

This is a time for our Vietnam vets to think about their bravery and remember their fellow vets who fought beside them.

I have friends and a brother-in-law who served in Da Nang and the Mekong Delta. While we were home in safety, they were crawling through rice paddies. This was a very unpopular war and these vets were often treated poorly on their return home. I’m very thankful that those that are important parts of my life came home.

Please remember the Vietnam vets that you know and call them to say “thank you for your service.” I do. I remember.
