Letter: Response to U.S. Capitol attack letter

Sauk Valley Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

In response to a letter to the editor in the March 27, 2021, Sauk Valley Media print editions titled, “U.S. is invincible if we work together.” The writer asked, “Did you ever dream that our beautiful Capitol would be attacked and desecrated by our very own citizens?”

Yes. Several attacks on the Capitol have occurred since I was born.

March 1, 1954: Four Puerto Rican Americans fired guns in the House of Representatives, injuring five congressmen. The attackers acted to demand independence for the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.

March 1, 1971: A bomb exploded in the Capitol, no one was injured, damage estimate, $300,000. The Weather Underground claimed responsibility and done to protest ongoing U.S. supported bombing in Laos.

Nov. 7, 1983: A bomb tore through the second floor of the Senate wing of the Capitol. No injuries, damage estimate, $250,000. The Armed Resistance Unit claimed responsibility in retaliation for military actions in Grenada and Lebanon.

1998: The fatal shooting of two Capitol police officers

Jan. 6, 2021: We know what and why this happened.

For an in-depth look at all acts of violence on the Capitol, do a computer search for “A History of attacks at the U.S. Capitol.” There have been many types of violent episodes that took place since the Capitol was built.

If you want a real eye opener, look up the terrorist groups involved in the ′71 and ′83 attacks, what their agendas were about, who their leaders were and what they are doing today.

The final statement made by the writer referencing Jan. 6, 2021, was “Lets work together and root out this anti-American, fascist movement that has taken hold of so many Trump followers.” The ′71 and ′83 attackers were not Trump followers, yet it happened.

All people who are fans of the past president are not anti-American and a fascist. Wonder what this individual calls people who want to rewrite/retell history, support the cancel culture, defund law enforcement, limit an individual’s constitutional rights to further an agenda and support left leaning ideas of the current party in power?
