5 Things: Children’s Theater presents ‘Oliver! Jr.’

-If you want the favor of the light-fingered Fagin, then “You’ve got to pick a pocket or two …” A musical version of the Charles Dickens’ classic “Oliver Twist” is just one of the local activities in this week’s 5 Things To Do in the Sauk Valley.

1 “Oliver! Jr.” is a Children’s Theater production of the Lionel Bart’s classic musical, adapted for child actors. It will have two performances at Dixon Historic Theatre, 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It’s the story of a workhouse orphan in Victorian England, who escapes to London and falls in with a group of pickpockets led by Fagin and the sinister Bill Sikes. An ensemble cast of the Children’s Theater has been working since September on the production, which includes favorite numbers “Consider Yourself,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Oom-Pah-Pah.” Tickets are $5 to $10.

2 The Rock City Blues Band presents “Live Blues Funk and Soul!” along with some favorite Christmas Blues starting at 8 p.m. Saturday at Starlight Theatre and Lounge, 314 First Ave., Sterling.

3 The Holiday Light Display at Centennial Park, 508 E. 11th St., Rock Falls. The driving holiday light experience is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 26.

4 “Scrooge The Comedy” — the adults only version — will be 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at White Pines Playhouse, 6712 W. Pines Road, White Pines Forest State Park, Oregon. This is the 32nd annual production of the play, a zany, wacky take on “A Christmas Carol.” Tickets are $44 to $53 for this dinner theater matinee. Call 815-655-2400, ext, 3 to reserve.

5 Faith Christian School Elementary Campus will stage “The Best Gift,” a drive-through living nativity event, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 7772 S. Clinton St., Dixon. For information, call 815-652-4806.
