Penguin Project of the Sauk Valley to perform Schoolhouse Rock this weekend

STERLING - The Penguin Project of the Sauk Valley will be performing “Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr.” this weekend at Centennial Auditorium, 1608 Fourth Ave.

The Penguin Project provides a safe space for children and young adults with special needs to have a chance to display their talents and try new things. The actors are each paired with peer mentors who help them during the process of auditions, learning lines, blocking and choreography.

Penguin Project of the Sauk Valley, along with partners Dixon and Sterling Kiwanis and Woodlawn Arts Academy, will return to the stage at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The actors and mentors have been rehearsing since August and are excited to tell the story of Tom Mizer, a teacher who has first day of school nerves.

“Using songs from the beloved television show from the 70s, Tom’s inner emotions come to life and help him get ready for his first day of school,” program director Dawn Arndt said in a news release. “With special appearances by Interplanet Janet, Elvis, the Statue of Liberty and more, you won’t want to miss this walk down memory lane.”

Tickets are $10 and are available at the box office at Centennial Auditorium or online at www.centennialauditorium.ticketleap/schoolhouse
