Dixon Kiwanis distribute peaches under a glaring sun

DIXON — The peach boxes were heavy and the overhead sun relentless.

But Dixon Kiwanis Club members remained upbeat and smiling as they distributed their tasty cargo during pickup on Thursday at Dixon High School.

“Honestly, it’s so much fun,” said club president Nancy Hammitt. “We get to see all our friends. Everybody comes through and the community is just amazing. They are so supportive and fantastic.”

Gabriel Rodriguez, 34, of Dixon Kiwanis helps unload peaches from a refrigerated truck on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Dixon High School parking lot.

Members of the Kiwanis affiliated Key Club helped direct traffic, sending vehicles into two lanes for drive-thru pick-up. About 20 Kiwanis members were on hand, either unloading the truck, handing over the peaches or accepting payment from beneath a sun shade set up on the lot.

Advance orders on peaches were $40 per half-bushel box, which contains between 30 to 40 peaches.

Peach sales help the Kiwanis fund four scholarships for high school seniors, provide a free book to every first grader in the city’s public and private schools and provide a financial boost to assorted not-for-profit organizations.

“Anything that has to do with kids, we want to be a part of,” Hammitt said.

The sale was scheduled to last until 6 p.m., but the rate at which the truck load was being emptied shortly by midday, it seemed unlikely the spare containers would last that long. Hammitt said anyone wanting to purchase extras have to get in line early.
