Polo council may decide today on bank’s counter offer on CedarStone building

POLO – The city, which offered $175,000 for CedarStone building, which it wants for a new City Hall, is mulling the bank’s $225,000 counter.

The city was under contract to buy the property at 610 S. Division Ave. for $229,000 late last year, but the deal expired while the building was tied up in bankruptcy proceedings.

On Jan. 18, the council asked for an extension until today, so it could further inspect the building before making a decision.

Also at its Jan. 18 meeting, the council waived this quarter’s $325 liquor license fees for businesses impacted by COVID-19.

The next payment will be due May 1, making the waiver a full year.

Officials also are considering banning parking on state Route 26.

“There have been accidents by Casey’s and cars parked on Illinois 26 makes it hard to plow,” Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said. “If we go no parking at all, we return that whole road to the state. They’d take care of it and plow it. If they redid it, we’d have to do our own parking lane if it was still ours.”

Removing parking also would help Moring Disposal, the city’s sanitation contractor, which is may no longer be doing alley pickups because its trucks get stuck in them and cause wear and tear on the alleyways.

The contract with Moring is up in coming weeks, and the city will be taking bids from it and other contractors.
