WASHINGTON, D.C. – “When there is nothing separating you from an armed mob except a door and a few brave cops, you are no longer a politician. You are simply a mom, a wife, a daughter and a citizen. Legislation is the furthest thing from your mind; all you want in that moment is to live.”
Those are the words of U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, who shared her experience of being in the Capitol during the Jan. 6 uprising in a harrowing column written for CNN Opinion.
Bustos, a former journalist who is serving her fifth term in the House, was in the thick of the chaos.
“Ashli Babbit, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran who was among the mob, was shot and killed mere feet away from where I had been sitting just minutes before ... ” she wrote.
