The Bureau Valley softball team grabbed a one-run lead in the first inning then added three insurance runs between the fifth and seventh innings to seal a 4-1 win over Newman on Wednesday in a Three Rivers Conference East game.

The Rock Falls softball team defeated Freeport on the road in a nonconference game Wednesday, while the Sterling softball team tied the game twice on solo home runs before falling in Marengo.

The Dixon softball team carried over the momentum from Tuesday's big conference road win and jumped on Rockford Lutheran for a 16-1 win in three innings Wednesday in a Big Northern game at Reynolds Field in Dixon.

Brendan Tunink was in cruise control Wednesday afternoon at Bureau Valley. Given a 4-0 lead before he took the mound, the Newman sophomore southpaw ran with it, shutting out Bureau Valley on a two-hit shutout as the Comets won 4-0.

Orders are due by Saturday.
