Dixon signs agreement with Surf Broadband for fiber development

Surf Broadband Solutions is expanding the city's fiber network and aims to complete work in a year.

DIXON - Fiber development could be coming to Dixon as soon as January.

Surf Broadband Solutions, which constructed the citywide fiber network in Rock Falls, will be installing fiber lines throughout town in 2022.

“They want to build out the whole town,” City Manager Danny Langloss said. “It’s very exciting, and we’re in a very good position here.”

The Dixon City Council recently entered an expression of interest agreement with Surf to show support for the project.

There will be no cost to the city, and the company will be building in city right-of-ways, Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said.

The project will mean faster upload and download speeds for residents as well as add competition with internet providers, he said.

The agreement includes “cooperating in the development of broadband infrastructure and other related communications services for the benefit of the city of Dixon and its residents.”

Officials are also hopeful that fiber access could be a development tool for drawing additional industries or a data center.

The network could be operational in 2023.
