Dixon inclusive playground ready for grand opening

DIXON - The new inclusive playground for children with disabilities opens Friday in Dixon.

Inclusive playgrounds provide a sensory-rich environment that enables children to develop physically, socially and emotionally with equipment accessible to anyone, especially those with disabilities.

Work to install the playground started last week at John Dixon Park, and the Dixon Park District will have a grand opening at 3 p.m. Friday.

Features include mobility device ramps, accessible play features, and sensory panels as well as an “inclusive whirl” similar to a merry-go-round but accessible for those in wheel chairs.

The playground cost $120,000, and the district is hoping to expand it in the next year or two with handicapped-accessible swings.
