Sterling council to discuss LeFevre reconstruction; National cleanup at tonight’s meeting

Sterling City Council

STERLING – The City Council will talk about a project to rebuild part of LeFevre when it meets at 6:30 tonight via Zoom.

The city plans to rebuild LeFevre between Avenues K and C using Federal Air Route funds. That requires the city to match 20%; city officials plan to use Motor Fuel Tax funds to pay its share of $210,000, but dipping into that fund requires council approval.

Engineering work would begin this year, with work completed in 2023.

The council also will discuss hazardous waste removal at the old Stanley-National complex. A building on the site was used to pretreat wastewater from the facility. The city sought bids to remove treatment tanks, chemical tanks and piping, and once that removal is complete, the city can proceed with demolishing the facility, part of the its long-term plan to revitalize the riverfront.

Members also will discuss hiring an additional firefighter to help alleviate overtime worked by firefighters during the pandemic. The hiring would be temporary, with the new firefighter either leaving at the end of the pandemic or being brought on permanently should another firefighter leave the department.

The city has paid $314,000 in overtime over 8 months, as firefighters work longer hours to fill in for others in quarantine.
