Sheriff confirms Polo toddler died of self-inflicted gunshot

OREGON – The gunshot wound that killed a 23-month old Polo toddler Thursday was self-inflicted, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle confirmed in a post today on the department’s web page.

The investigation continues, the post said.

How the boy obtained the gun and whether any charges may be pending was not released.

Polo police, sheriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services all responded to a home in the 300 block of South Franklin Avenue around 7 p.m. Thursday. The boy died soon after at KSB Hospital in Dixon.
