Area roundup: Local athletes fare well at Class 1A indoor state track meet

Several local athletes earned top-12 finishes at the Illinois Top Times Class 1A Indoor State Meet on Friday at the Shirk Center in Bloomington.

Oregon’s Jenae Bothe was the top local finisher, placing second in the shot put with a throw of 11.87 meters. Erie-Prophetstown’s Braxton Froeliger took third in the long jump (6.43 meters), and Newman’s 4x800 relay team of Jacob Donald, Thomas Powers, Kaden Welty and Lucas Simpson finished fifth (8:40.54).

Erie-Prophetstown’s Riley Packer was sixth in the 800 (2:27.70), teammate Kennedy Buck placed seventh in the 400 (1:02.76) and 12th in the shot put (10.48 meters), and Fulton’s 4x200 relay team of Abbigail Thyne, Annaka Hackett, Mikayla Gazo and Lauren Mahoney also took seventh (1:52.32).

Oregon’s Daniel Dominguez placed eighth in the shot put (15.05 meters), Amboy-LaMoille’s Brock Loftus took ninth in the 3200 (10:13.25), and fellow Clipper Elly Jones was ninth in the long jump (4.90 meters) and 11th in the triple jump (9.80 meters).

Bureau Valley’s Ashley Nordstrom added an 11th in the shot put (10.52 meters), and the Erie-Prophetstown quartet of Ben Lantz, Trevor Cobo, Michael Carlson and Froeliger took 12th in the 4x200 (1:37.91).

The Class 2A and 3A events will be held Saturday.

College basketball

Skyhawks named all-conference: Four Sauk Valley men’s and women’s basketball players were named to the all-Arrowhead Conference teams, the league announced Friday.

Devon House was the lone first-teamer, while men’s teammate Andre Brandon was a second-team selection. Women’s players Hailey Walters and Josie Rank were also named second-team all-conference.

House was also voted to the all-Region IV second team. As reported earlier, Walters and Rank were also both named all-region.

Thursday’s result

Softball

Rock Island 4, Erie-Prophetstown 3: The Panthers hit the road and got its game in despite the inclement weather Thursday, falling to Rock Island after rallying to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning.

Erie-Prophetstown scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Mya Jones singled with one out, then Jaylynn Hamilton drove her in with a triple before scoring on an error to tie it up at 3-3.

But the Rocks answered in the bottom of the inning. Bella Allison singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Gabby Taber’s walk-off single to notch the victory.

Jaden Johnson doubled and hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for E-P (1-1), and Jaiden Oleson had two singles and an RBI. Aylah Jones allowed four earned runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walking three.

Campbell Kelley led Rock Island (2-1) with a home run and two RBIs, Taber and Taylor Pannell both added doubles, and Allison also drove in a run. Delia Schwartz allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in a complete game, striking out nine without a walk.
