Rock Falls boys, girls both win Big Northern Conference basketball games

Oregon senior Isaac Kaltenbrun advanced to Day 2 of the IHSA State Tournament, as he finished in the top 30 among individuals not on advancing teams Friday on Day 1 at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.

Kaltenbrun rolled a six-game series of 1,227 to sit in 55th place overall, and 26th place among individuals not on teams moving on to Saturday’s finals. The top 30 individuals not on the top 12 advancing teams qualify for the finals.

Kaltenbrun opened his morning series of 629 with games of 224 and 212, then closed his 598 series in the afternoon with a 223 final game. He advanced to Day with 10 pins to spare; the last individual qualifier for finals was Zach Ludwig of Breese Mater Dei, who bowled a 1,217. Kaltenbrun will bowl six more games to finish out his Hawks career on Saturday.

Kaltenbrun is 168 pins behind overall leader Eric Roberts of Harlem, who had a 1,395, 11 pins ahead of second-place Jason Laba of Lockport (1,384).

Harlem also leads the team standings after Day 1, finishing at 6,517 through six games. Minooka is second with a 6,319, and Lockport sits in third by one pin over Joliet West (6,281-6,280).

Boys basketball

Rock Falls 55, Oregon 23: The Rockets rolled past the Hawks for a Big Northern Conference win at the Blackhawk Center, leading 29-6 at halftime after an 18-3 scoring surge in the second quarter.

Gavin Sands hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points for Rock Falls (10-12, 2-3 BNC), while Booker Cross added eight, Timmy Heald and Ayden Goff scored seven points apiece, and Victor Rivera hit two 3s for six points. Eleven different Rockets scored in the game.

Evan James had 13 points for Oregon (2-11, 0-5), and Noah Johnson hit two 3-pointers for six points.

AFC 53, Polo 47: The Raiders led 14-3 after the opening quarter, 29-17 at halftime, and 40-30 through three periods in an NUIC South win over the Marcos in Ashton.

Carson Rueff had 18 points, and Lane Koning added 13 for AFC.

Brock Soltow scored 23 points to pace Polo, and Tyler Merdian hit three 3-pointers and chipped in 10 points.

Eastland 46, Amboy 16: The Cougars turned a 13-10 halftime lead into a runaway NUIC South win in Lanark, outscoring the Clippers 20-3 in the third quarter and 13-3 in the fourth.

Carson Heckman hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for Eastland, and Gavin Sigel added 12 points.

Kyler McNinch led Amboy with seven points.

Milledgeville 50, Forreston 41: The Missiles pulled away from a 19-18 halftime lead with a 31-23 scoring edge in the second half of an NUIC South road win.

Kieren Harris had 18 points, Bryce Aude scored 11, and Connor Nye added nine for Milledgeville.

Owen Greenfield’s nine points led Forreston, and Tommy Appel added eight.

Riverdale 67, Morrison 35: The Mustangs fell behind 21-11 in the opening quarter and 37-15 by halftime in a Three Rivers West loss in Port Byron.

Trey Strating finished with 15 points, and Andre McQueen scored 13 for Morrison.

Brandon Stone hit four 3-pointers and had 21 points to lead Riverdale, with Kye Smeltzly scoring 17.

Erie-Prophetstown 79, Orion 62: The Panthers led 26-11 after one quarter and 47-29 by halftime in a Three Rivers East road win.

Kolby Franks poured in 31 points to pace Erie-Prophetstown, with Caleb Naftzger and Connor Sibley scoring 17 points apiece.

Chance Stropes finished with 15 points, and Xavyor Winter added 13 for Orion.

Girls basketball

Rock Falls 57, Rockford Lutheran 41: The Rockets rolled to a Senior Night win at Tabor Gym, outscoring the Crusaders 15-3 in the fourth quarter after entering the period with a 42-38 lead.

Brooke Howard and Claire Bickett both scored 12 points for Rock Falls (14-11, 5-3 Big Northern), and Mallory Pinske added 10. Ten different Rockets scored.

Sydney Carlson and Mikayla Huffine scored 12 points apiece to lead Lutheran.

Stillman Valley 42, Dixon 32: The Duchesses dropped a Big Northern game at Lancaster Gym, as they were outscored 16-6 in the fourth quarter after starting the period tied at 26.

Ella Govig’s 16 points led Dixon (23-5, 5-3 BNC), while Jessie Pitman scored six and Sam Tourtillott finished with five.

Taylor Davidson had 11 points for Stillman, with Brooke Jordal adding 10.

Wrestling

Sterling 5th at WB6 meet: The Golden Warriors had a pair of runner-up finishers, as well as a third and two fourths en route to a fifth-place team finish at the Western Big 6 Meet in Moline.

Sterling scored 77 points to finish behind Geneseo (197), Rock Island (194), Moline (187) and Galesburg (109.5).

Drew Kested placed second at 145 pounds, and Tommy Tate took second at 160. Alejandro Arellano was third at 285, and Chase Ullrich (182) and Diego Leal (220) both finished fourth.

Morrison splits at home: The Mustangs defeated Putnam County 42-18, but lost 54-29 to Riverdale in a home triangular.

Nate Schaefer won a pair of contested bouts for Morrison, winning by pin at 285 pounds against Putnam County, and by pin in 1:25 at 220 against Riverdale.

Camden Pruis (132) and Cameron McDonnell (195) also won by pin against Riverdale, and Kayden White (182) added a technical fall. The Mustangs gave up seven forfeits in the loss to the Rams, but picked up six forfeits in the win over Putnam County.
