The Morrison girls basketball team jumped out to a big lead and defeated Newman 71-17 in a Three Rivers Conference crossover game Wednesday night in Morrison.
The Fillies led 26-4 after the opening quarter and 41-9 by halftime. Shelby Veltrop had 21 points, Kendra Fisher added 18, and Camryn Veltrop scored 16.
Jess Johns’ 13 points paced the Comets.
Boys basketball
Aquin 87, AFC 32: The Raiders trailed 44-24 by halftime and never recovered in an NUIC South loss in Freeport.
Jordan Harris led AFC with nine points, Carson Rueff and Mason Munroe scored seven each, and Angel Soto and Griffin Bushman both added six.
Ollie Arndt led Aquin with a game-high 24 points.
Boys bowling
Freeport 3,638, Sterling 3,454: Ethan Melcher set the Golden Warriors’ season-high series record with a 676, but it wasn’t enough in a loss to the Pretzels at Blackhawk Lanes.
Melcher rolled games of 246, 215 and 215 to lead Sterling, while Tristan Oelrichs closed his 610 series with games of 200 & 216. Micah Hernandez rolled a 574 series, Andrew Doughty added a 565, and Dylan Doss bowled a 531. Brenden Stanley’s 498 rounded out the Warriors’ lineup.
Payton Worker bowled a 722 series, with games of 239, 245 and 238 to lead Freeport, and Bryce Shembergor rolled a 631 series consisting of games of 215, 209 and 207.
Wrestling
Rock Falls 1-2 at home: The Rockets defeated Amboy 33-24, but lost to Durand (24-21) and Dakota (60-12) in a four-team meet at Tabor Gym.
Aaron Meenen won all three of his bouts at 120 pounds, notching two first-period pins and a 4-0 decision. Logan Williamson (126) added a 40-second pin and Alan Furman (145) won an 8-4 decision against Durand, and Ryan McCord (160) won by pin in 4:44 against Amboy.
Amboy’s Dan Bevan (152) won by pin in 2:47, and that dual featured 11 forfeits.
Panthers split at home: Erie-Prophetstown fell to Newman 55-24, but defeated Polo 39-35 in a pair of duals in Erie.
Newman got wins from Daniel Kelly (technical fall at 132 pounds), Seamus McDonnell (decision at 138) and Hunter Luyando (pin at 182), as well as seven forfeits against the Panthers. E-P got pins from Nick Ballard (220) and Elijah Friedrichsen (285).
Ballard also won by pin against Polo, and Alex Bomleny (138) won a 5-4 decision, while the Panthers received five forfeits. Wyatt Doty (132) won by technical fall and Wyatt Queckboerner (182) won by pin for the Marcos, who received four forfeits.
Morrison swept in Edgington: The Mustangs lost 30-27 to Mercer County and 47-24 to host Rockridge in a Three Rivers triangular.
Nathan Schaefer (220 pounds) won a pair of pins for Morrison, and Donny Reavy (138) won by pin and decision. Cameron McDonnell (195) added an 11-second pin against Rockridge, and Kayden White (195) notched a first-period pin against Mercer County.
