Area roundup: Sterling boys win on road, Sterling girls lose at home on the hardcourt

The Sterling boys basketball team used a second-quarter surge to take control on the road Tuesday against Rochelle, then held off the Hubs for a 71-62 victory.

JP Schilling poured in 25 points for the Golden Warriors (3-1), who led 17-12 after one quarter before outscoring Rochelle 25-12 in the second. Lucas Austin scored 14, and Andre Klaver and Tyree Kelly added eight points each.

Tanner Lager’s 18 points and Raul Aguirre’s 16 points paced the Hubs, who got back in it with a 22-15 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Oregon 66, AFC 64, OT: The Hawks rallied from a 34-24 halftime deficit to pull out a nonconference win on the road in overtime.

Jameson Caposey had 17 points, and Anthony Bell scored 14 for Oregon, which outscored AFC 19-12 in the third quarter, 14-11 in the fourth, and 9-7 in overtime. Joey Gelander and Josh Crandall added 11 points apiece.

Lane Koning’s 22 points paced the Raiders, with Carson Rueff adding 18, and Jordan Harris scoring 13.

Milledgeville 64, Durand 54: The Missiles led throughout in an NUIC victory at home.

Kieren Harris poured in 28 points to lead Milledgeville, which led 16-9 after one quarter, 26-21 at halftime, and 40-37 through three periods before pulling away in the fourth. Izaac Toms-Smith scored 14, and Connor Nye added 12 for the Missiles.

Trenton Taylor had a game-high 31 points for the Bulldogs.

Serena 53, Amboy 28: The Clippers fell behind 27-13 by halftime and never caught up in a nonconference loss on the road.

Connor Simpson had seven points, and Brennan Blaine scored six for Amboy, which trailed 41-22 through three quarters.

Camden Figgins’ 18 points paced the Huskers.

Fulton 48, Aquin 37: The Steamers remained undefeated, slowly pulling away for an NUIC win on Stan Borgmann Court.

Ian Wiebenga’s 16 points paced Fulton (5-0), which led 17-14 after one quarter, 30-25 at halftime, and 39-29 through three periods. Baylen Damhoff added 10 points, and Ethan Price scored nine for Fulton.

Ollie Arndt had 16 points for Aquin, and Dom Alber added 13.

Forreston 35, Pearl City 23: The Cardinals outscored Pearl City 13-4 in the second quarter and 13-6 in the fourth for an NUIC road win.

Joseph Snyder finished with a game-high 12 points for Forreston, while Cole Becker and Owen Greenfield scored six points apiece.

Ethan Petta’s seven points paced the Wolves.

Faith Christian 72, Fulton Unity 31: The Falcons rolled to victory with a balanced attack, as nine different players scored.

Evan Fassler had 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for Faith, while Levi Schuler finished with 14 points, six steals and four assists.

Girls basketball

Winnebago 84, Sterling 27: The Golden Warriors fell behind 27-5 by the end of the first quarter and never recovered in a loss at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

Addie McCombs had 10 points to pace Sterling, which was also outscored 27-4 in the third period. Kathryn Rowzee added eight points.

Miyah Brown scored 28 points to lead Winnebago.

Oregon 58, Harvard 28: The Hawks jumped out to a 22-7 lead in the opening quarter, and extended it to 37-9 by halftime in a nonconference road win.

Hadley Lutz had 24 points for Oregon, and Mariah Drake scored 19.

Julie Chupich led the Hornets with 11 points.

Polo 47, Durand 24: The Marcos led 29-19 at halftime, then outscored Durand 13-2 in the third quarter en route to an NUIC win on the road.

Lindee Poper poured in 23 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked seven shots for Polo, and Nicole Boelens added 11 points and six assists.

Orangeville 48, AFC 45: The Raiders were outscored 17-12 in the fourth quarter in an NUIC loss on the road.

Taylor Jahn scored 27 points for AFC, which led 15-13 after one quarter, trailed 25-21 at halftime, then led 33-31 through three periods. Tatum Stroh added nine points.

Leah Baker led the Broncos with 13 points, while Whitney Sullivan and Ella Doyle each scored 11.

Dakota 26, Forreston 17: The Cardinals were outscored 11-2 in the second quarter in a low-scoring NUIC loss on the road.

Jenna Greenfield scored seven points to lead Forreston, and Keeli Larson pulled down seven rebounds.

Rachel Kloster’s 10 points paced Dakota, and Mary Zettle added nine.

Boys bowling

Geneseo 3,237, Sterling 3,194: The Golden Warriors actually won two of the three games, but the Maple Leafs won the second game by 112 pins to eke out a Western Big 6 victory at Blackhawk Lanes.

Tristan Oelrichs opened his 606 series with games of 223 and 201 to lead Sterling. Mikah Hernandez had a 562 series, Ethan Melcher rolled a 539, Andrew Doughty added a 536, Brenden Stanley had a 534 that included an opening game of 101, and Connor Jaglisch chipped in a 416.

Matt Krohn (584 series, 248 game), Bryce Sanders (578 series, 230 game) and Landen Pruett (575 series, two 202 games) led the Leafs.

Oregon 3,349, Dakota 2,547: The Hawks rolled to victory at Town & Country Lanes in Mt. Morris, winning each game by 240 pins or more.

Isaac Kaltenbrun closed his 662 series with games of 248 and 220, and Brandon Rowe opened his 661 series with games of 242 and 225 to lead Oregon (6-1). Jackson Werren and Stylar Klapp both bowled 538 series, with Werren rolling a 229 in his second game. Bryan Immel (483) and Gavvin Surmo (467) also competed for the Hawks.

Jacob Hoelste led the Indians with a 543 series and a 215 game.

Girls bowling

Dakota 2,361, Oregon 2,173: The Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, dropping all three games at Town & Country Lanes in Mt. Morris.

Ava Wight finished her 573 series with a pair of 202 games to lead Oregon (2-1). Trinity Hultquist (376 series), Mackenzie Alford (347), Kendra Ehrler (322), and Kylie Krug (269) also bowled for the Hawks.

Hope Evenson had Dakota’s high series with a 525.

Wrestling

Dixon 36, Lena-Winslow 32: The Dukes got a pin and decision in the final two weight classes to pull out a dual victory on the road.

With Dixon trailing 32-27 after the 195-pound bout, Justin Dallas pinned Morgan McPeek in 5:16 at 220 pounds, then Shaun DeVries won a 6-3 decision over Mike Haas at heavyweight to secure the win.

Owen Brooks added a pin in 3:45 at 160 pounds for the Dukes, while Brody Potter pinned his opponent in 3:37 at 182. Christopher Sitter added a 5-2 win at 126, and Dixon also received a pair of forfeits.

Newman sweeps triangular: The Comets defeated Byron 45-30 and West Carroll 67-3 in a pair of duals in Savanna.

Against Byron, Brady Grennan (120 pounds) and Hunter Luyando (170) both recorded pins, and Mason Glaudel (152) won a 7-2 decision. Newman also received five forfeits.

The Comets picked up pins by Jared Carney (138) and Chris Accardi (195) against West Carroll, and received nine forfeits.

Morrison splits at home: The Mustangs wrestled a pair of duals that ended in 48-18 scores, defeating Mendota by that margin while falling to Oregon by the same final.

Heavyweight Nathan Schaefer won a pair of first-period pins for Morrison, while Zach Milder (138 pounds), Logan Baker (152) and Cameron McDonnell (195) all won first-period pins against Mendota. Camden Pruis (126) and Kayden White (182) won by pin against Oregon.

The Hawks got pins from Griffin Marlatt (120), Lane Halverson (132), Seth Stevens (145) and Dalton McCammon (152) in the win over Morrison, while Jared Glendenning added an 11-6 decision at 138.

Polo falls twice at home: The Marcos dropped a pair of duals, losing 42-18 to Dakota and 60-12 to Freeport.

Daniel Engel won a pair of first-period pins at heavyweight, and Lucas Nelson won a first-period pin at 126 against Freeport. Polo received a pair of forfeits against Dakota.
