Area roundup: Dixon, Sterling volleyball both fall on the road

Eastland tops Fulton in NUIC volleyball; Dixon, Sterling tennis both pick up victories

The Dixon volleyball team dropped a nonconference road match Monday, falling to Sycamore, 25-15, 25-17.

Mallory Coley led the way for the Duchesses with six kills and nine digs. Ella Govig had three kills and three blocks, Olivia Cox added three kills and two blocks, and Elena Castillo-Wetzell added nine digs. Holli Miller dished 10 assists, and Hanna Lengquist had five assists.

Washington def. Sterling, 19-25, 25-23, 25-10: Grace Egan had 23 kills, 20 digs and four blocks, but the Golden Warriors came up short in a nonconference loss on the road.

Kathryn Rowzee added five kills, Delali Amankwa dished 28 assists, and Karmen Weinrich chipped in 17 digs for Sterling (6-14). Katie Dittmar had four blocks and three aces, and Maggie Rowzee served four aces.

Eastland def. Fulton 25-20, 25-15: The Cougars won an NUIC match in straight sets in Lanark.

Addie Burkholder spiked 11 kills for Eastland, and Chloe Sweizter had 13 digs. Jenica Stoner dished 19 assists, Annika Myre served six aces, and Quinc Haverland stuffed a pair of blocks.

Reese Dykstra led Fulton with three kills, while Brooklyn Brennan finished with eight digs, two kills and two aces. Teegan Germann added six digs, and Kara Stoecker stuffed five blocks.

Girls tennis

Sterling 5, Rock Island 0: The Golden Warriors went on the road and picked up a Western Big 6 win, blanking the Rocks.

Ellie Aitken won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Jenica Francis won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

In doubles play, Anna Meltzer and Layla Tablante won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, Sam Feather and Madison Hubbs won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, and Tori Arduini and Laura Heuser won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.

Dixon 4, Freeport 1: The Duchesses won both singles matches and a pair of doubles matches in a nonconference win at the Emma Hubbs Tennis Courts in Page Park.

Chloe Coil won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Miriya Jones won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Leah Kuehl and Grace Ferguson won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Leah Stees and Siena Kemmeran won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Girls golf

Rock Island 237, Sterling 244: The Golden Warriors lost a Western Big 6 dual at Emerald Hill, despite Maddie Pink earning medalist honors by seven strokes with a 43.

Also for Sterling, Jozlyn Johnson fired a 56, Makayla Wolfe shot a 72, and Libbi Kendrick added a 73.

Thunder host Cougars in Thomson: West Carroll shot a 226 in an NUIC dual with Eastland at Sandburr Run, with the Cougars not fielding a full team.

Kylie Hill led the Thunder with a 54, good for runner-up honors. Victoria Reiland fired a 56, Raven Siegmeier shot a 57, and Katie Smith added a 59.

Eastland’s Bella Lego was medalist with a 48, while Allison Weese shot a 64 and Cheyenne Schmitt had a 69.

Boys golf

Eastland 182, West Carroll 256: The Cougars cruised to an NUIC win at Sandburr Run, shooting the top six scores in the dual.

Andy Anderson was medalist with a 41, and Kellen Henze was runner-up with a 44 for Eastland (8-6, 7-6). Peyton Urish fired a 48, Keegan Strauch and Gabe York both shot 49s, and Carson Heckman added a 50.

Cooper Smith paced the Thunder with a 60, Erik Kice shot a 63, Wilson Bressler fired a 65, and Durlin Richardson added a 68.
