The Erie-Prophetstown wrestling team defeated West Carroll 54-21 in a dual meet Wednesday in Savanna.
Isaac Goodson (152 pounds), Dean Otten (160) and Gunnar Wuebben (170) all won by pin for the Panthers, who also received six forfeits.
Ethen Doty (138) won by pin for the Thunder, and Wyatt Doty (132) won a 7-1 decision. West Carroll also received a pair of forfeits.
Stillman Valley 37, Polo 36: The Marcos lost by a single point when Stillman heavyweight Omar Gallardo won by pin in the dual’s final bout to erase a five-point Cardinals deficit.
Joel Ludwig had the only contested victory for Polo, winning by pin in 32 seconds at 220 pounds. The Marcos also received five forfeits.
Sterling 36, Rock Falls 20: The Rockets won more contested bouts than the rival Golden Warriors, 4-3, but Sterling received three forfeits to win a dual meet Tuesday night at Challand Middle School.
Isaiah Mendoza (132 pounds), Thomas Martin (138) and Javier Luna (220) all won by pin for Sterling.
Rock Falls’ Anthony Reyes (113) and Ryan McCord (170) won by first-period pin, while Aaron Meenen (120) had a 16-1 technical fall in 2:46. Dylan Williamson won a 1-0 decision at 195.
Royals send Junis to Triple-A Omaha: Kansas City optioned Rock Falls native Jakob Junis to its Triple-A affiliate in Omaha on Monday.
Junis picked up a win in relief during his last outing, against the Twins on June 3. For the season, Junis is 2-3 in 15 appearances (five starts), with a 5.19 ERA in 34 2/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 39 hits – including six home runs – and 21 runs (20 earned), with 35 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Locals litter News-Gazette all-state volleyball team: Led by Sterling seniors Bree and Brook Borum, 13 players from the Sauk Valley area were named to the Champaign News-Gazette all-state volleyball team, released Monday.
The Borum twins were both named to the first team, as was Forreston junior Kara Erdmann.
Sterling sophomore Grace Egan, Rock Falls junior Mallory Pinske, and Eastland seniors Karlie Krogman and Natalie Hughes were named to the Special Mention 50 squad.
Six girls earned honorable Mention 100 spots: Rock Falls freshman Claire Bickett, Newman junior Ally Clevenger, Oregon junior Jenae Bothe and senior Ella Martin, and West Carroll seniors Katie McGinnis and Lily O’Connor.
Hole-in-one at Emerald Hill: Matt Johnson of Rock Falls scored a hole-in-one last Friday at Emerald Hill Golf Course in Sterling.
Johnson aced the par-4 sixth hole with a Big Bertha driver. The shot was witnessed by Ernest Noafter.
Emerald Hill Ladies League continues season: The Emerald Hill Ladies Golf League has played each of the last two Tuesday, following their season-opening day on May 25.
This week, play of the day was Blind Partners. Deb Cuvelier & Sue Nestor took first place, Vicki Carlson & Julie Pratt placed second, and Maxine Stern & Jane Minard took third. Cuvelier won Closest to the Pin, and tied Pratt for low gross. Pratt also won low putts.
On June 1, play of the day was Guess Your Score. There was a three-way tie at the top between Cuvelier, Ruth Heflebower and Sue Nestor. Nestor also had a chip-in, while Cuvelier had a pair of birdies and Pratt also birdied. Mimi Boysen was low gross, and Cuvelier, Heflebower and Pratt tied for low putts.
