Roundup: Dixon baseball, softball both pick up victories

AFC baseball salvages split with Amboy; Oregon softball sinks Rock Falls

Mac Clark made his first varsity start and earned his first win on Monday as Dixon beat Genoa-Kingston 7-0.

Clark pitched six innings and struck out 10, walking two and allowing four hits.

Both starters were in total control until the top of the fifth, when the Dukes broke the scoreless tie with a three-run rally. Dixon added a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Eli Dever was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Michael Ullrich drove in two more.

AFC 11, Amboy 2: The Raiders earned a doubleheader split in Ashton, blowing open a 5-2 game with a six-run seventh inning.

Carson Rueff had an RBI and scored three runs for AFC. Braiden Runkle, Jared Warner and Evan Kopp also added RBIs.

Preston Henkel drove in both runs for Amboy, as Ian Eller and Andruw Jones scored.

St. Bede 5, Erie-Prophetstown 3, 9 inn.: The Panthers dropped a Three Rivers home game to the Bruins.

The teams traded runs in the third and fifth for a 3-3 tie, then played scoreless baseball for the next three innings before St. Bede broke through with a pair of runs in the ninth.

Jamie Miner struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings on the mound for Erie-Prophetstown. Bryce Rosenow pitched 2 2/3 innings and struck out four.

Miner and Logan Wunderlich each had two hits. Austin Cole had two RBIs.

Softball

Dixon 3, Genoa-Kingston 2: The Duchesses scored two runs in the bottom of the first, saw the Cogs tie the score in the second, then picked up the winning run in the sixth.

Sam Tourtillott and Kiertsyn Mays each had RBIs for Dixon.

Tourtillott struck out seven and allowed two runs, both unearned, on four hits in the win.

Oregon 11, Rock Falls 6: The Hawks built an early 5-0 lead, saw Rock Falls chip away at it with a run in the third and two more in the fourth, then built it back up in a Big Northern win in Rock Falls.

Ashlyn Kitzmiller, Bella Koertner and Liz Mois each had two hits for Oregon. Lena Trampel drove in two runs.

Brooke Howard and Abby Whiles each drove in two runs for Rock Falls. Whiles went 3-for-4 at the plate. Bree Morgan hit a double, and Jersey Thomas tripled.

Nicolette Udell allowed five runs, all unearned, on one hit in one inning of work in the circle. Whiles relieved her and pitched six innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits and struck out four.

Erie-Prophetstown 2, St. Bede 1, 11 inn.: As both teams strung up zero after zero, the Panthers eventually broke through with a run in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Bruins.

E-P scored in the fifth to take the lead before St. Bede tied it with a run in the sixth.

That was all the offense anyone could muster, as the Panthers were limited to three hits by Bruins pitcher Payge Pyszka, who struck out five in 10 1/3 innings.

Aylah Jones pitched 11 innings for the Panthers and struck out 20, allowing a run on eight hits and no walks.

Emma Davis and Mya Jones drove in runs for Erie-Prophetstown.

Sherrard 15, Fulton 9: The Steamers fell to the Tigers in the Three Rivers West despite four Fulton home runs.

Ally Reed hit a pair of home runs, and Faith Ottens and Anna Jacobs also hit home runs. Jacobs had four of her team’s 13 hits. Liz Fish struck out two and walked no one in the circle, while allowing 15 runs on 21 hits.

Boys tennis

Sterling 9, Freeport 0: The Golden Warriors swept the Pretzels.

Brecken Peterson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Connor Pham won the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Carter Ryan won 7-5, 6-1. Kayden Loos won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Benjamin Boze won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Yamaan Alkhalaf won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Pham and Peterson won 6-4, 3-6, 10-5; Loos and Ryan won 6-1, 6-4; and Boze and Alkhalaf won 7-6 (10), 4-6, 12-10.

Dixon 3, Rock Island 2: The Dukes won in nonconference play.

Lucas Healy won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 doubles, Owen Grot and Alex Ullrich won 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Grant Boss and Bashar Elbzour won 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.

SATURDAY

Baseball

Newman splits with Rockriodge: The Comets dropped the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday against Rockridge, but won the second in extra innings.

Rockridge took the first game 2-0 with runs in the fourth and sixth. Newman got five hits in the game, all singles, and could not bring a run home.

Elias Henkel pitched six innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits and struck out 11. Jake Ackman pitched an inning of relief and faced three batters, needing just seven pitches.

In Game 2, the Comets and Rockets traded runs in the fourth. Rockridge scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead before Newman tied it in the bottom of the inning. After a scoreless seventh and scoreless eighth, Rockridge scored in the top of the ninth, but Newman answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kyle Wolfe went 3-for-5 with a double. Blake Wolfe was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Kyle Wolfe struck out five in seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits for the no decision. Ackman came on in relief and struck out three in two innings, allowing an earned run on four hits.

Stillman Valley 12, Dixon 2, 5 inn.: The Dukes suffered their first loss of the season in a nonconference game at Stillman Valley.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the first and two more in the second to open up an early lead.

Jacob Gaither pitched 1 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits, walking six and striking out three.

Eli Dever drove in a run. Mason Randick went 2-for-2.

Erie-Prophetstown 10, Riverdale 0, 5 inn.: The Panthers’ Kolby Franks and Bryce Rosenow combined to no-hit the Rams.

Franks struck out three in 3 2/3 innings. Rosenow struck out one in his 1 1/3 innings.

Jamie Miner drove in three runs and had three hits. Rosenow also had three hits for E-P.

The Panthers scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to invoke the run rule.

Softball

West Carroll 14, Milledgeville 4: Madison Magill drove in four runs, with a two-run single in the fifth contributing to and eight-run Thunder rally in that inning.

Abbey Skiles had a pair of RBIs for the Thunder. Hannah Bauch earned the win in the circle for West Carroll, with five strikeouts in six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

Emma Foster and Lilly Smith both went 2-for-3 for Milledgeville. Maliah Grenoble pitched four innings for the Missiles and allowed five runs on two hits.

Amboy 3, Lena-Winslow 2: A pair of runs in the top of the sixth lifted the Clippers to a win over the Panthers.

Maeve Larson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Mallory Powers and Dana Merriman also drove in runs.

Hannah Blanton struck out 10 and allowed three walks and five hits.

Hawks sweep Hiawatha: Oregon won both ends of a doubleheader in Kirkland, 9-2 and 3-0.

Mia and Lena Trampel pitched a combined shutout in Game 2, and combined to limit Hiawatha in the first game.

Bella Koertner had six hits in the doubleheader. Liz Mois had a home run.

La Salle-Peru 18, Dixon 0, 5 inn.: The Duchesses managed just three hits in a nonconference road loss.

Kierstyn Mays had a fourth-inning double, and Arianne Smith and Olivia Mowery each had fifth-inning singles for Dixon (2-7). Sam Tourtillott took the loss in the circle, with only five of the 18 runs earned, as the Duchesses committed seven errors.

Girls soccer

Dixon 8, Winnebago 0: Taylor Harrison had five goals and two assists to lead the Duchesses to a Big Northern Conference win on the road.

Paige Stees, Katie Drew and Emma Evans each added a goal, with Stees and Drew both dishing an assist. Abby Goff had four assists for Dixon.

Wrestling

Rock Falls earns sweep: Rock Falls won a pair of duals, beating Monmouth United 27-0 and Rockford Jefferson 21-3.

Allan Furman (138 pounds), Ryan McCord (170), Dylan Williamson (195) and Dontavious Brown (220) scored first-period pins against Monmouth United, with Payhton Smith adding a 6-3 decision at 145.

Against Jefferson, Smith scored a 4-0 decision, while McCord won via pin in 1:48 and Brown won via tech fall in 2:29.

Dixon takes two: The Dukes won a pair of matches.

The Dukes beat Sycamore 36-30, with Justin Dallas getting a pin at 285. Mitchell White (195), Cade Hey (132), Austin Hey (138) and Christopher Sitter (126) won via decision.

Dixon beat Belvidere North 59-19. Austin Hey won via tech fall. Jayce Kastner won via pin in 3:35 at 145. Steven Kitzman won via pin in the 160-pound match in 1:59. Dallas scored a pin in 47 seconds at 285.

Boys track & field

Grafton sets record in Palatine: Dixon’s Cadyn Grafton ran a 4:19.25 in the 1600 at Palatine’s Distance Night, setting a new school record. He took seventh in the event.

Brock Drengenberg took seventh in the 800 in 1:56.71.

Sterling hits track at Bob Reade Field: The Golden Warriors ran in an ABC meet involving all Western Big 6 teams at Geneseo.

Owen Anderson won the B flight of the 800 in 2:08.02. Javon Bruce won the C flight in 2:08.10.

Manuel Cano won the C flight of the 300 hurdles in 46.79.
