DIXON – St. Mary Elementary and Junior High School in Dixon is the recipient of a state grant to help pay for a field trip to a state historical site, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced.

The school was awarded $500 that can be applied to transportation costs for a visit to Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site in Petersburg for students in grades 6 to 8.

IDNR Director Colleen Callahan said nearly $6,000 in donations will help fund 13 field trip grants. Winners were from 10 counties across the state. The grant program was started last school year.

“This program allows students to visit locations throughout the state to see first-hand what they’ve been learning about in the classroom,” Callahan said. “Our students need the opportunity to experience Illinois’ historical resources in person. We are pleased to be able to support learning outside the classroom with these grants.”

The Illinois Conservation Foundation accepts donations for the program. Applications for the 2022-23 school year are due Sept. 30.
