Polo High School’s October Student of the Month: Cole Faivre

Cole Faivre, 17, of Polo, is Polo High School’s October Student of the Month. He is the son of Andrew and Amanda Faivre, and he has two sisters, Anna and Avery.

Favorite class: I really enjoy Biology 105, because it’s very interesting and I like studying it.

Least-favorite class: I like all of my classes, but statistics is my least favorite. I have never enjoyed math, even though my statistics class is fun.

Favorite teacher: Ted Alston. He’s also my head football coach, and he’s just a really fun guy. I’m in his construction class, and we have lots of fun while learning a lot.

If you could create any new class at your school, what would it be? Probably some sort of a life skills class, like how to pay taxes or take out a mortgage or something. I think that would be a good idea.

School activities in which you participate: I play football, wrestling, and baseball. I’m also on the school’s bass fishing and academic teams. I am the sentinel for our school’s FFA chapter, and I’m also in Varsity Club, Spanish Club, and I work backstage for the Drama Club if they need help. I was also inducted into the National Honor Society.

Civic, church, or other volunteer activities in which you participate: My volunteer activities have essentially been limited to helping with sports activities, such as our annual youth wrestling camp, our flag football camp, and then redoing our weight room and other related activities.

Do you have a job? I work with my grandpa and uncle on our family’s farm. It is a lot of fun because we always have a good time, and a lot of the work we do, such as shoveling out grain bins, provides a solid workout.

How would you describe your group of friends? We are a really fun group. We play some video games together in the winter, and do lots of fishing in the summer. We also watch lots of sports.

What will you do after high school? I’m not quite sure exactly where I want to go to college yet, but I will be playing football and studying environmental science.

What is something you learned in high school that you think you’ll never use? Anything I’ve ever done in math, because nobody I know ever uses it.

If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? Not much, honestly. I’ve had a really nice time here, but maybe a fancy video board for the football field would be cool. It would show replays and whatnot.

What does it take to be a successful high school student? Effort. I have really found it harder to fail than harder to succeed. The staff is very helpful, and if you put in any effort at all, you will do fine.

What do you do in your free time? I spend lots of free time fishing, especially in the late spring and early summer during spawn. In the winter I primarily just hang out inside, watching the Packers and the Fighting Illini play.

What’s one thing in your life you can’t do without? I couldn’t imagine my life without playing or watching sports.

What kind of music are you listening to? I’m not picky. I’ll listen to anything that sounds good. I would say my absolute favorite is ’90s grunge, but I listen to about everything.

What scares you? Not much, honestly. I’m not a big fan of heights. Also BIG spiders, not little ones.

If you could try any job for the day, what would it be? Commercial fisherman, because it’d be a lot of fun to get paid to catch walleye or something all day.

If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Alaska. I would go on a 2-week salmon and lake trout fishing trip. My second option would be somewhere in Europe – probably the United Kingdom or Germany.

What is your favorite childhood memory? The first time I went to Disney World. I love Disney World.

What is the best way to cheer you up? Tell me some good news.

What is your life’s philosophy? I’ve never really thought about it. I would say that I can do anything, but I have to go out and get it.

Is there anything else you want people to know about you? If it isn’t clear already, I love fishing. I go fishing basically anytime the weather is nice.
